Add maximum device power draw and retain suitable headroom for startup and expansion.
Before you start
Work on a copy or a controlled test when the change can affect production. Keep timestamps, screenshots and the previous configuration so the result can be compared.
Step by step
- List each PoE device with its maximum draw or PoE class.
- Add maximum power values rather than average consumption.
- Add headroom for startup, temperature, replacement, and growth.
- Compare the result with the switch total PoE budget and per-port limits.
- Also verify power-supply redundancy for critical services.
Validation
Repeat the original test after the change and confirm that the expected service works without creating a new regression. Document the final state.
PoE: per-port power and total budget are two different constraints
Technical checkpoints
- 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt define different power levels; a “PoE+” switch does not guarantee its PSU can deliver maximum power on every port simultaneously.
- Sizing should use each device’s expected maximum draw, then add headroom for startup, temperature, replacement and growth.
- Per-port limit must be checked separately from total budget: a 370 W budget does not help a 30 W-limited port powering a 45 W device.
- Some switches reduce available PoE budget with a single power supply or depending on PSU redundancy mode.
Worked example
8 phones × 7 W + 4 Wi-Fi APs × 22 W + 6 cameras × 12 W = 216 W. With 25% headroom, target at least 270 W of available PoE budget.
56 W + 88 W + 72 W = 216 W
216 W × 1.25 = 270 W minimum
370 W switch: headroom OK
195 W switch: insufficientTopic-specific pitfalls
- Adding average consumption underestimates boot peaks, camera IR load or high-power Wi-Fi radios.
- Confusing “24 PoE+ ports” with “24 × 30 W available” leads to oversubscribing devices.
- For critical service, ignoring budget behavior after a PSU failure can turn redundancy into a PoE outage.
How to validate
- Maximum total + headroom stays below the budget actually available in the chosen PSU mode.
- Each device stays below the per-port limit and its PoE standard is supported.
- PoE priorities are configured for critical devices if the switch can shed ports.
