Simple definition

AGarter decides which connections are allowed or blocked between networks and the Internet.

Technical definition

It can filter addresses, ports, protocols, applications and users. Modern models often add TLS, IPS, antivirus, web filtering, VPN and SD-WAN functions.

What’s the point? ?

Protect the network, segment VLANs and limit the exposure of services.
