Likely causes

  • A VSS writer or provider failed
  • Snapshot storage is unavailable or full
  • A backup application interrupted the snapshot operation

Checks and resolution

  1. Read the full Event ID 12289 message.
  2. Check VSS writers, providers and shadow storage.
  3. Review backup application logs at the same timestamp.
  4. Correct the identified component and retest snapshot creation.
