Simple definition
A backup is used to recover deleted, damaged or encrypted files or systems.
Technical definition
It can be complete, incremental or differential and must be tested. Rule 3.2-1 recommends three copies, on two different media, including one off-site or isolated.
What is it used for ?
Reappear after material breakdown, human error, corruption or ransomware.
Practical example
Servers are saved every night, a copy is replicated off site and a restoration is tested every month.
