What does this error mean?
VSS reported an error while creating or managing a snapshot.
Likely causes
- A VSS writer or provider failed
- Snapshot storage is unavailable or full
- A backup application interrupted the snapshot operation
Checks and resolution
- Read the full Event ID 12289 message.
- Check VSS writers, providers and shadow storage.
- Review backup application logs at the same timestamp.
- Correct the identified component and retest snapshot creation.
Precaution: Do not delete shadow copies or reset VSS components until the cause has been identified.
