Simple definition

UDP prefers speed and does not systematically check that each data has arrived.

Technical definition

The datagram protocol does not include acknowledgement, re-ordering or retransmission, and these functions must be performed by the application when required.

What is it used for ?

DNS, voice over IP, streaming, online games and other time-sensitive uses.

Practical example

A telephone conversation can tolerate the loss of a small audio package rather than waiting for it to be retransmitted.

  • Loss of packages difficult to detect
  • Flow blocked by the firewall
  • NAT ex-pirating rapidly
