Technical definition

Address Resolution Protocol broadcasts a request on the local network to associate an IPv4 with an address Mac, and then temporarily keeps the association in a cache.

What is it used for ?

Allow a position to send an Ethernet frame to the right local network equipment.

Practical example

Before contacting 192.168.1.1, a PC may use ARP to discover the address of his gateway.
