What is Port 68 used for?

Network addressing. The protocol or service commonly associated with this port is DHCP Client.

Role and operation

A DHCP client normally uses UDP 68 as its local port and contacts the DHCP server on UDP 67. Initial exchanges can use broadcast because the host does not yet have an IP address. The server or a DHCP relay then returns offers and configuration parameters to the client on UDP 68.

This traffic should normally remain limited to network segments where DHCP is required. Protect the network against unauthorized DHCP servers with appropriate switch security features and avoid unnecessary Internet exposure.
