A phone extension is an internal PBX number assigned to a user, phone, application, or service.
Technical definition
In an IP telephony system, the extension represents an internal destination in the dial plan. It can be associated with a SIP phone, softphone, voicemail box, or another PBX object. The endpoint usually registers with SIP credentials; an extension number should not be confused with a public DID/DDI number.
What is it used for?
Provide short internal dialing, identify PBX users and services, and attach routing, forwarding, or voicemail rules to an internal destination.
Practical example
Extension 214 is assigned to a user. The SIP phone registers to the PBX with the associated credentials; coworkers can dial 214 directly, while a public DID can be routed to that extension.
