Simple definition

RDP allows you to control a Windows computer remotely as if you were in front of your screen.

Technical definition

Remote Desktop Protocol transports display, keyboard, mouse and possibly clipboard, printers or readers. It uses the port by default TCP and UDP 3389.

What is it used for ?

Server administration, telework and access to hosted applications.

Practical example

An administrator connects to an internal server in RDP after establishing a VPN.
