Ping

A simple network test to check if a destination is responding and to measure the return time.

Simple definition

Ping sends a small request to a device and measures the time it takes to receive its response.

Technical definition

The command usually uses messages ICMP Echo and Echo!. A lack of response does not always prove that the machine is offline, because ICMP can be filtered.

What is it used for ?

Test connectivity, detect packet loss and compare latency.

Practical example

A technician tests the gateway first, then an Internet address and finally a name DNS To locate the breakdown.
