Simple definition

The WAN connects networks that are not in the same place, often through a telecom operator.

Technical definition

A Wide Area Network can use the Internet, MPLS, SD-WAN, leased links or mobile networks. On a firewall, WAN frequently refers to the interface connected to the ISP.

What is it used for ?

Connect multiple agencies or connect a local network to the Internet.

The headquarters and an agency communicate through two Internet accesses connected by a VPN IPsec.
